Meet the team

The purpose of my PhD is to contribute to the to knowledge and understanding of how health interventions can create or exacerbate inequalities between socio-economic groups. In particular I am focusing on Type 2 diabetes with the intention of using the South Tees Diabetes Register and other data sources to conduct a quantitative analysis. The aim is to investigate whether particular aspects of diabetes care pathway leads to inequalities in intermediate health outcomes and complications associated with diabetes.

Barbara's background is in Social Anthropology and she has a Masters in Health Services Research and Public Health. Barbara’s previous research focused on the relationship between the attitudes, values and beliefs of health professionals within various health care settings and the reform agenda. Current work activities involve statistical analysis of hospital based activity to support the development of integrated care pathways within primary and secondary care. She is also project manager for SHAPE, a web based information planning tool which supports commissioning and service re-design across England.

Felicity is the statistician at NEPHO and helps provide statistical advice when needed. Felicity has worked on the new mental heatlh services and ethnic minorites report, the prison count me in census, HSMRs and analysis of survey data. Felicity is working on creating and maintaing a set of tools in visual basic.

I am a member of the core analytical team providing support in data sourcing, data presentation and data analysis. I have highlighted roles around European data and information, population data, lifestyle data (tobacco, obestiy) and in the joint PHO production of the APHO health profiles.

Helene is the ChiMat Specialist for the North East of England and is based at the Regional Maternity Survey Office in Newcastle. Helene's role is to engage with key stakeholders by attending meetings, workshops and one to one sessions to demonstrate the use of ChiMat's tools and intelligence, with the focus on improving service delivery in the child and maternal health community. Manager of team for collection of regional specialist alcohol and drug treatment data into national database (NDTMS)

Professor Wilkinson has been director of the North East Public Health Observatory since it was created in April 2003, and prior to that was the Director of the Northern and Yorkshire Public Health Observatory from May 2000. As a medically qualified doctor, after qualifying in medicine at Edinburgh University, John trained as a general practitioner, eventually entering practice in Boston, Lincolnshire. He undertook public health training in Nottingham, and after a post as a consultant in public health in Cumbria, he worked as a Director of Public Health in North Yorkshire, before taking up his post in the Observatory.

My current job involves the following tasks: Literature searches on specialist databases. Update of collections of public health topics. Annual Evidence Updates on certain topics. Routine maintenance tasks. NHS Evidence liaison. Ad hoc literature searches for NEPHO.
