Briefing: Life expectancy 2008-2010
Between 2008-2010, baby boys born in the North East of England are expected to live to an average age of 77.2 years while girls should live t0 an average age of 81.2 years. The average live expectation for England is higher (78.6 years for boys, 82.6 years for girls) but the gap between England and the North East is narrowing..
By the age of 65, men in the North East can expect to live another 17.2 years and women an extra 19.7 years.
The former government set a target of reducing the gap between local life expectancy and life expectancy for England by at least 10% between 1995-1997 and 2010. Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar & Cleveland and the former Durham district of Derwentside have all achieved this target.
